»To the North«
El norte es territorio de leyendas, de tierras infinitas y mares llenos de bruma y naves de hielo. En sus viajes, Natascha Klein captura la belleza de esta región aislada y frágil. Sus fotografías son un hermoso y sorprendente catálogo de un mundo nuevo: ballenas y pingüinos, todo tipo de aves decorando el cielo, horizontes velados e instantes irrepetibles atravesados por matices de luz y oscuridad.
¿Cuándo nació tu interés por la fotografía?
Hasta donde puedo recordar, siempre me ha gustado capturar todas mis experiencias. Ya fuera en la escuela, en eventos o durante las vacaciones familiares, la cámara siempre ha ido conmigo. Conseguí mi primera cámara SLR con 18 años, y mi sentido de la estética se hizo cada vez más pronunciado a medida que me formaba como diseñadora de medios. Inmediatamente después de terminar mis estudios, hice mi primer “viaje fotográfico” real, con todos mis ahorros y un par de amigos de la escuela, a Islandia. Y allí me enamoré de la belleza fotogénica de los países nórdicos. Para mí no hay nada más inspirador que la naturaleza con todos sus componentes, y eso es exactamente lo que intento plasmar en mis fotografías hasta el día de hoy.
¿Cuál es el elemento más importante en la concepción de tu fotografía?
Me encantan los contrastes. En la naturaleza me suele llamar la atención un juego de luces suaves con sombras oscuras. También me interesa llevar al espectador conmigo, que me acompañe en mi viaje a la belleza de los países nórdicos. Una narración sólida genera mucha más atención que una simple fotografía de un paisaje hermoso, lo que me permite arrastrar al espectador a mi mundo o destacar temas que me conmueven y que son cercanos a mi corazón. Por ello, crear una serie a partir de una escena o un lugar, me aporta alegría y hace que el momento sea más real para mi audiencia.
Háblanos de la belleza natural del norte. ¿Qué aspectos o características de los paisajes nórdicos son los que más te interesan? ¿Qué sientes cuando estás allí?
Para mí, los paisajes del norte son sencillamente únicos. La naturaleza es muy hermosa y encantadora, pero existe un contraste con la naturaleza dura e implacable que a menudo se experimenta. Me ha hechizado, en particular, el norte de Noruega y Groenlandia. Todavía se puede sentir la originalidad de nuestro planeta, la naturaleza que allí cuenta historias del pasado y que, al mismo tiempo, nos muestra el futuro de una manera trágica y bella. Ningún lugar de la Tierra es tan frágil como el Ártico, y es muy importante que la gente sepa que este lugar existe y que vale la pena hacer un esfuerzo para preservar su naturaleza, incluso si viven a miles de kilómetros de él.
En segundo lugar, y ésta es probablemente la razón principal que marca la diferencia con respecto a otros lugares, es que en estos parajes siento que los humanos no lo controlan todo, no están en la cima de la cadena alimentaria y los días los determina el capricho del clima de la naturaleza y no de nosotros, los humanos. Allí nada se da por sentado y se vive en armonía con la naturaleza.
¿Qué es lo que más disfrutas de tu proceso fotográfico?
Soy muy lenta en mi proceso. A menudo, después de un viaje, mis fotografías permanecen en un disco duro durante días sin que las mire ni haga una selección. Luego, cuando culmino todas las cosas organizativas del viaje, soy feliz sumergiéndome en las fotografías para revivir y procesar todo el viaje. Pero destacaría cuando tomas un poco de distancia y te das cuenta de lo único y hermoso que fue lo que viste y experimentaste. Entonces me resulta aún más inspirador extraer lo mejor de mis fotografías.
¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito o el lugar que más te ha sorprendido? ¿Qué lugar te gustaría fotografiar?
Probablemente, mi lugar favorito será siempre la salvaje costa este de Groenlandia. Es el lugar más hermoso que he visto en mi vida y el ambiente allí es muy especial y único.
Lo más sorprendente, por otro lado, fue seguramente descubrir las islas Georgias del Sur, en la otra punta del planeta: nunca había visto tanta vida salvaje en un solo lugar. Allí, no importa hacia dónde mires, es casi imposible no tener un animal en tu campo de visión, y eso fue realmente impresionante. Además, el paisaje me recordó mucho a Groenlandia, lo que hace que sea muy fácil ponerlo en mi top 3 de lugares.
Por supuesto, hay muchos más lugares interesantes que todavía me gustaría ver y fotografiar, pero una cosa es segura: casi todos están en el norte. Svalbard y Alaska están definitivamente en lo más alto de mi lista.
¿Qué es para ti viajar?
Ésta es una pregunta apasionante y al mismo tiempo difícil. Hay muchas formas de viajar y en cada viaje te sientes inmerso en un mundo diferente y a veces nuevo. No sólo desde el punto de vista cultural o paisajístico, sino que la forma de viajar puede ser muy diferente. Generalmente no soy alguien a quien le guste planificar sus viajes hasta el último detalle, simplemente me gusta dejar que las cosas sucedan, es decir, dejarme llevar. Por lo tanto, mi forma favorita de viajar es, básicamente, tomar la autocaravana con mi marido y mi perro y conducir hacia el norte sin un plan determinado, sabiendo que nos espera otro verano lleno de aventuras y encuentros. La sensación de no saber exactamente a dónde vas o con quién te encontrarás en el camino que tienes por delante es algo muy especial y que aprecio mucho, sobre todo poder experimentarlo una y otra vez.
¿Cómo te mantienes creativa? ¿Cuáles son tus principales fuentes de inspiración?
Mi mayor inspiración es la naturaleza misma. Te sorprende una y otra vez y, especialmente, las duras condiciones climáticas, cuando nadie quiere salir de casa, pero que desencadenan algo en mí y me dan ganas de capturar esa naturaleza salvaje. La música también es una gran inspiración porque puede expresar muchas cosas, y a menudo tengo la sensación de que subraya exactamente lo que quiero transmitir con mis fotografías. Eso me ayuda enormemente en el proceso de postproducción. Y por último, pero no menos importante, por supuesto, el trabajo de otros fotógrafos y artistas. Me encanta mirar libros de fotografía y revistas con las historias que acompañan a las imágenes, es algo que realmente me inspira.
¿Cuáles crees que son las claves para conseguir una gran fotografía de paisaje?
¡Salir! Puedes ser un buen fotógrafo y tener el mejor y más caro equipo, pero ¿de qué sirve si no sales y te pierdes el momento? Creo que el tiempo y la paciencia son los componentes más importantes en la fotografía de naturaleza, ya sea de vida salvaje o de un ambiente luminoso y especial en un paisaje; normalmente llega de forma inesperada y rara vez se puede planificar. Así que cuanto más tiempo pases ahí fuera, mayores serán las posibilidades de capturar un momento conmovedor.
Además de la fotografía, ¿qué otras actividades te interesan?
Quien me conoce sabe que soy una gran fanática de las ballenas, y que me gusta ver documentales marinos y adentrarme en la conservación de los océanos en mi tiempo libre. Otro de mis grandes objetivos es aprender a navegar en algún momento de mi vida y tal vez incluso tener mi propio velero en un futuro próximo, ya veremos.

»To the North«
The North is a territory of legends, of infinite lands and seas full of mist and ships of ice. In her travels, Natascha Klein captures the beauty of this isolated and fragile region. Her photographs are a beautiful and surprising catalog of a new world: whales and penguins, all kinds of birds decorating the sky, veiled horizons and unrepeatable moments crossed by nuances of light and darkness.
Where does your interest in photography come from?
As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved capturing everything I’ve experienced. Whether at school, at events or on family vacations – the camera was always with me. I got my first SLR camera when I was 18 and my sense of aesthetics became more and more pronounced as I trained as a media designer. I took my first real “photo trip” with all my savings to Iceland with two school friends straight after my training and immediately fell in love with the photogenic beauty of the Nordic countries. For me, there is nothing more inspiring than nature with all its components and that is exactly what I try to capture in my photos to this day.
What is the most important element in the conception of your photography?
I love contrasts. An interplay of soft light with dark shadows is usually what catches my attention in nature. It is also very important to me to take the viewer with me on my journey into the beauty of the Nordic countries. A strong story telling generates so much more attention than just a beautiful landscape photo and allows me to take the viewer into my world or to draw attention to topics that move me and are close to my heart. So creating a series from a scene or a place is what brings me joy and also what makes the moment more real to my audience.
Tell us about the natural beauty of the North. What aspects do you like or interest most about these landscapes? What do you feel when you are there?
For me, the landscapes of the north are simply unique. The nature is so beautiful and delightful yet there is this contrast to the harsh, unforgiving nature that is often experienced. Northern Norway and Greenland in particular have cast a magical spell over me. You can still feel the originality of our planet, the nature there tells stories from the past and at the same time shows us the future in a tragic and yet beautiful way. No place on earth is as fragile as the Arctic and it is so important that people see that this place exists and that it is worth making an effort to preserve this nature, even if they live thousands of kilometers away from it.
Secondly, and this is probably the main reason that makes the difference to other places, is that in these places I feel like humans do not control everything, they are not at the top of the food chain and the days are determined by the weather whims of nature and not by us humans. Nothing is taken for granted and you live there in harmony with nature.
What do you enjoy the most about your photography process?
I am very slow in my process. My photos often just stay on my hard drive for days after a trip without me even looking at them or making a selection. When all the organizational things are done after a long trip, I’m happy to dive into the photos of the trip and relive and process everything. Especially with a little distance, you realize how unique and beautiful everything you saw and experienced was and it is all the more inspiring for me to bring out the best in my pictures.
Which is your favorite place or the place that most surprised you? What place would you like to photograph?
My favorite place will probably forever be the wild East Coast of Greenland. It’s simply the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen and the atmosphere there is so special and unique.
Most surprising on the other hand was probably South Georgia on the other side of the world – I’ve never seen so much wildlife in one place, no matter where you look, it’s almost impossible not to have an animal in your field of vision and that was really impressive. In addition, the landscape reminded me a lot of Greenland, which makes it very easy to put it on my top 3 places.
There are of course so many more exciting places that I would still like to see and photograph, but one thing is certain: they are almost all in the north. Svalbard and Alaska are definitely at the top of my list.
What meaning does it have for you, at all levels, to make a trip?
That is an exciting and at the same time difficult question. There are so many ways to travel and on every trip you feel like you are immersed in a different and sometimes new world. Not only culturally or scenically, but also the way you travel can be so different. I’m generally not someone who likes to plan my trips down to the last detail, I just like to let things happen and go with the flow. My favorite way to travel is therefore to simply take the camper van with my husband and my dog and drive north without a plan, knowing that another summer with all its adventures and encounters awaits us. The feeling of not knowing exactly where you’re going or who you gonna meet on the journey ahead is something very special, which I appreciate so much, being able to experience it again and again.
How do you stay creative? What are your main sources of inspiration?
My greatest inspiration is definitely nature itself. It surprises you again and again and especially the harsh weather conditions, when nobody really wants to leave the house, trigger something in me and make me want to capture this wildness. Also music is a great inspiration for me, music can express so much and I often have the feeling that it underlines exactly what I want to express with my photos. That helps me enormously in the post production process. And last but not least, of course, the work of other photographers and artists. I just love looking through photo books and magazines with the stories that go with the photos, it really inspires me.
In your opinion, what are the keys to getting a great landscape photograph?
Go out! You can be such a good photographer and have the best and most expensive equipment, but what is the point if you don’t go out and miss the moment? I think time and patience are the most important components in nature photography, whether it’s wildlife or a special light mood in a landscape – it usually comes unexpectedly and can rarely be planned. So the more time you spend outside, the higher the chance of catching a moving moment.
Besides photography, what other activities are you interested in?
Everyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge whale fan and I like nothing more than to watch marine documentaries and get into ocean conservation in my free time. Another big goal of mine is to learn to sail at some point in my life and maybe even have my own little sailing boat one day, we’ll see.
