Procuro mantener mis composiciones sencillas y evitar distracciones innecesarias.

Me encanta escuchar música, descubrir nuevos artistas e ir a conciertos y festivales.

»The way you perceive the world«
In his work, Jeroen Verhulst embraces subtlety, paying close attention to small details. He focuses, for instance, on the variations of light that transform an ordinary place into a space filled with emotion. His photographic process requires time and patience, as he develops an intimate connection with the places he photographs in an effort to reveal what often goes unnoticed. In this way, guided as well by soft colours and a suggestive narrative, his photographs invite us to contemplate and to look beyond appearances.

What are your main lines of work as a photographer?
My photography is mainly focused on landscapes, travel and everyday life. I’m drawn to quiet moments, beautiful light and ordinary scenes that might otherwise go unnoticed.
I love capturing the atmosphere of a place rather than simply documenting what it looks like. Whether I’m walking along the coast, exploring a city or travelling somewhere new, I’m always looking for those little moments that make me stop and take a photograph.
For me, photography is about capturing a feeling.
What quality do you like or interest most about photography?
What I love most about photography is its ability to preserve a moment in time. A photograph can bring back a memory, a feeling or the atmosphere of a particular place.
I also love how photography changes the way you look at the world. You start noticing small details, interesting light and compositions that you might otherwise walk past.
It encourages me to slow down and really observe my surroundings.

Your work stands out for its exquisite use of quiet light and natural tones, and compositions that convey a great sense of serenity. What attracts you most to this aesthetic?
I’ve always been attracted to natural light, soft colours and peaceful scenes. I especially love the light during the early morning or late afternoon, when everything feels a little softer.
I try to keep my compositions simple and avoid unnecessary distractions. Sometimes the most ordinary scene can become something special because of the light or the atmosphere.
I also love the timeless feeling of analogue photography, and I try to bring some of that character into my digital work.

How do you choose locations? What catches your eyes when you are there and shooting?
Most of the time, I don’t have a specific photograph in mind when I go out. I simply enjoy walking around and seeing what catches my attention.
Light is probably the most important thing for me. It can completely transform an ordinary location.
I also look for interesting compositions, colours, textures and small details. Sometimes I return to the same place many times because the conditions are always different.
Living in Zeeland, close to the sea, has definitely influenced the way I photograph. The coastline is a place I keep coming back to.

Which is your favorite place or the place that most surprised you? What place would you like to photograph?
It’s difficult to choose just one favourite place. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some beautiful locations, but the coast of Zeeland will always be special to me. It’s where I feel at home and where I’ve taken many of my favourite photographs.
I also love travelling and discovering new places. Every destination has its own atmosphere, light and colours.
There are still many places I would love to photograph. Japan is definitely high on my list, especially for its combination of busy cities and peaceful landscapes. I’d also love to explore the California coast and Iceland.
Tell us about your photography process. What do you enjoy most about it? What are the top challenging aspects, technical or not, of your images?
My photography process is quite simple and intuitive. I usually take my Fujifilm X100V with me when I go out. I love how compact it is and how it allows me to photograph without carrying too much equipment.
I also enjoy shooting analogue film. It makes me slow down and think more carefully before pressing the shutter.
What I enjoy most is being outside, exploring and finding unexpected moments. Sometimes I come home with only a few photographs, and that’s perfectly fine.
The biggest challenge is probably finding the right balance between light, composition and atmosphere. Not every day brings the conditions you’re hoping for, but that’s also part of the beauty of photography.

How do you stay creative? What are your main sources of inspiration?
I find inspiration in many different things. Photography, music, films, travelling and everyday life all influence the way I see the world.
I love discovering the work of other photographers, both in photography books and online. Seeing how others capture light, colour and everyday moments can be very inspiring.
But I think the most important thing is to keep exploring and stay curious. Sometimes simply going for a walk with my camera is enough to find new inspiration.

© Jeroen Verhulst
In your opinion, what is the most important quality a photographer should have behind the camera?
I think curiosity and patience are two of the most important qualities a photographer can have.
It’s not always about having the best equipment or knowing every technical detail. It’s about learning to see, noticing things that others might overlook and being willing to wait for the right moment.
I also believe it’s important to develop your own style and photograph what genuinely interests you, rather than trying to follow every trend.
I’m currently working on my first photography zine, Ode to the Coast, which brings together photographs inspired by the coastline and its atmosphere. I’m really enjoying the process of turning my photography into something tangible.
Besides photography, what other activities interest you?
Music is a big part of my life. I love listening to music, discovering new artists and going to concerts and festivals.
I also enjoy travelling, spending time outdoors and playing sports, especially padel and tennis. Recently, I’ve also started enjoying cycling more.
All these activities give me new experiences and inspiration, and photography often becomes a natural part of them.
